L’endroit sent fort la misère… Un vaste cabinet médical, cerné de vitres louches et de carreaux blanchâtres rongés par la crasse, quelque part dans un vague hôpital. Les humains ne paraissent pas mieux en point. Jim, 8 ans, dadais buté d’un mètre quatre-vingt, vient de débarquer en pyjama pour une consultation : il reste sourd à la voix de son grand-père… mort. Enfin soi-disant. Sa mère, gigolette évaporée, n’entend pas grand-chose à la réalité et avance dans l’existence en cabotant sans gouvernail. Quant au médecin, géniteur cavaleur au bord de la crise de nerf, il louvoie entre sa maîtresse, infirmière dépressive en mal d’amour, et sa femme, furie jalouse pendue au téléphone. Evidemment, lorsque le dit grand-père déboule dans la ronde, qu’il découvre l’identité du père du gamin, l’affaire prend un sale tour. Surtout qu’il colle de près, très près, sa fille et son petit-fils. « Leurs vies sont comme un rond-point éternel qui s’agrandit petit à petit, et la voiture dans laquelle ils se trouvent se défait pièce par pièce. (…). Au centre de ce jeu se trouve Jim. » résume le Norvégien Petter S. Rosenlund, qui remportait le Prix Ibsen avec cette pièce créée en 1997, alors qu’il travaillait comme journaliste à la télévision pour des documentaires sur la jeunesse.
Des comédiens étonnants
Mariant le rire et l’effroi en folle liberté, l’auteur ausculte le cœur nécrosé d’une société gavée de mensonges, de rêves frelatés, de détresses amoureuses et turpitudes incestueuses… Autant de névroses familiales et pulsions irresponsables révélées sous le regard de l’enfant. Et brutalement renvoyées pour finir. Ce qui n’est pas sans rappeler Victor ou les Enfants au pouvoir de Vitrac. Jean-Michel Ribes est à son aise avec ce comique effarant, qui zigzague allègrement du vaudeville au sitcom, de l’absurde à la farce en passant par le drame bourgeois. Sa mise en scène avance en équilibre entre satire et cauchemar. A ce jeu-là, les comédiens sont étonnants : Eric Berger fait un médecin comme il faut dans son complet trois pièces, Isabelle Carré est drôlement pathétique en célibataire avide de tendresse et bourrée de clichés, Jean-Yves Chatelais joue au grand-père rocker dragueur avec une bonhomie perverse, Micha Lescot (qui fut autrefois Victor, sous la direction de Philippe Adrien) leste Jim d’une ombre inquiétante et Hélène Viaux donne à la mère paumée une fragilité déjantée et touchante. Ce petit monde cinglé tourbillonne joyeusement dans le décor passablement glauque de Patrick Dutertre… jusqu’à s’anéantir. Le « bonheur est un grand trou noir », n’est-ce pas ?
