C’est en 2003, à l’âge de 36 ans, que Jean-Marc Mahy est sorti de prison, après dix-neuf années de détention. Incarcéré alors qu’il avait 17 ans pour « vol avec violence ayant entrainé la mort sans intention de la donner », cet homme aujourd’hui libre a souhaité devenir éducateur afin « d’aider les jeunes en difficulté à ne pas s’enliser dans la délinquance » et« de prouver aux (ex-) détenus que la réinsertion est possible à condition de la préparer ». « On ne parle pas assez des détenus qui s’en sortent, déplore-t-il. Les détenus eux-mêmes, eux surtout peut-être, doutent qu’il soit possible de s’intégrer dans une société que l’on a quittée il y a si longtemps. Il est important de leur montrer qu’il y a une vie après la prison. Bien sûr cette vie n’est pas facile, mais elle existe. Il est possible de trouver une autre issue que la récidive. » Enfermé au sein d’une cellule abstraite dont il dessine lui-même les limites en arrivant sur le plateau, Jean-Marc Mahy se raconte à travers un texte qu’il cosigne avec le metteur en scène Jean-Michel Van den Eeyden. Un texte que les deux hommes ont conçu comme « un hommage à une certaine détermination ou force de vie qui donne le courage de rester, quels que soient les obstacles, un homme debout ».
