Vous avez été invité par l’Académie de Théâtre de Shanghai à mettre en scène, en Chine, une pièce française. Pourquoi avoir finalement choisi de créer cette œuvre de Wang Che-Fou ?
Gérard Gelas : Parce qu’aller en Chine pour continuer de faire ce que je fais en France ne m’intéressait pas. C’est l’univers artistique de la Chine que j’avais envie de découvrir. Et pourtant, je dois dire que j’ai beaucoup hésité avant d’accepter l’invitation de L’Académie de Théâtre de Shanghai. Je me suis rendu dans cette ville, dans un premier temps, pour une master class. Et une fois sur place, j’ai trouvé le peuple et les artistes chinois passionnants. J’ai donc accepté de créer un spectacle, mais en mettant en scène une pièce du répertoire chinois.

On vous a donc proposé de lire Si Siang Ki, ou l’histoire de la chambre de l’Ouest, une œuvre écrite aux alentours du XIIIe et du XIVe siècle…
G. G. : Oui, il s’agit de l’une des œuvres emblématiques de la culture chinoise. Dès la première lecture, je suis tombé fou amoureux de cette pièce. C’est une comédie douce amère, une histoire d’amour contrarié entre deux jeunes gens qui n’appartiennent pas à la même classe sociale. Ce qui m’a immédiatement paru saisissant dans ce texte, en dehors de la trame narrative, c’est que sa poésie est constamment en relation avec les choses liées à l’univers, au cosmos. L’amour des deux jeunes héros est toujours relié à un frémissement de feuille de pêcher, à la lune qui se noie dans les nuages, à la pureté d’une nappe d’eau… Les responsablesde l’Académie de Théâtre de Shanghai m’ont demandé de porter un regard neuf et contemporain sur cette œuvre, un regard en dehors de toute lecture traditionnelle. J’ai supprimé les parties chantées pour transformer cet opéra en spectacle de pur théâtre.
Quelles impressions retirez-vous de vos premiers contacts avec les comédiens chinois ?
G. G. : Les acteurs chinois savent vivre et jouer le silence. C’est une qualité très précieuse. Ils possèdent également une grande capacité à se mouvoir, à travailler sur le corps, ont un sens naturel du mouvement et de l’espace. Et puis, ils font preuve d’un engagement et d’un enthousiasme impressionnants. Tout en assumant la culture millénaire qui est la leur, ils se sentent parfaitement à l’aise dans la modernité.
