Les affaires de Daniela et Arianna Mazzella, couturières de métier, ne sont plus florissantes. Au bord de la faillite, les deux sœurs emménagent dans l’ancienne loge de concierge qu’elles utilisaient jusque-là comme dépôt. C’est également là que Matteo, le fils d’Arianna, vit reclus depuis huit ans. A l’instar des hikikomori japonais, jeunes hommes qui se coupent du monde en se cloîtrant dans leur chambre, le personnage imaginé et interprété par Fabio Marra s’est isolé de la société. « Matteo s’est créé un univers parallèle, explique l’auteur, metteur en scène et comédien. Fasciné par le cosmos, il y trouve une forme d’évasion, loin du monde réel. » Comment rouvrir une porte restée fermée depuis de longues années ? Comment renouer le lien avec l’autre alors que l’on est resté si longtemps à l’écart ? Entre tendresse et ironie, Un pas après l’autre pose la question de la communication comme nécessité vitale.
