Tout tartuffe a ses accommodements, tout hypocrite a ses arrangements : qu’on cache un secret, une maîtresse ou un crime, on trouve toujours l’excuse morale, la justification altruiste et les complices pour aider au mensonge. Rares sont les consciences pures et les cœurs vertueux. Tous rient, pourtant, des déboires du pitoyable Gatinais qu’invente Labiche dans Un pied dans le crime et il y a fort à parier que depuis le 21 août 1866, date de la création de la pièce au Théâtre du Palais-Royal, bien des coquins l’aient applaudie sans s’y reconnaître ! La cruauté et le cynisme avec lesquels Labiche peint ses personnages pris dans une machine infernale dont ils ne sortent que par chance et par hasard fait pourtant froid dans le dos et a de quoi désespérer les saints et consoler les salauds ! Gaudiband, leste amateur du beau sexe affublé d’un fils naturel qu’il a élevé comme son filleul, reçoit en sa campagne ses amis Gatinais, pour conclure avec eux un mariage avantageux pour les deux familles. Gaudiband est en bisbille avec son voisin Blancafort. Gatinais, pensant arranger les choses en estourbissant le chat, objet de la chamaillerie, envoie une volée de plomb dans les fesses de Geindard qui, aidé par le filleul Gaudiband, traîne Blancafort en justice, au grand dam de Gatinais, qui, juré du procès, est amené à juger le crime qu’il a lui-même commis…
Spirale de la bêtise et de la lâcheté
Jean-Louis Benoit mène l’affaire avec entrain et si le premier acte, un peu poussif, peine à installer les conditions du délire, le spectacle gagne en drôlerie, en inventivité et en efficacité au fur et à mesure des rebondissements jusqu’à un dernier acte éblouissant où la veulerie, le chantage, l’ignominie, la bêtise, la lâcheté, la muflerie et la bassesse s’étalent avec une complaisance terrifiante. Grands nez, oreilles décollées, calvities honteuses ou cheveux dressés sur la tête, les comédiens ont des trognes à la Daumier et semblent tout droit sortis des manuels de physiognomonie du XIXème siècle. Les costumes de Marie Sartoux ajoutent à la caricature avec talent. Le décor, fait de larges panneaux de papier que transpercent ces personnages incapables de cadrer leurs affects, ménage des entrées et des sorties désopilantes et surprenantes. Les comédiens, tous très en verve, jouent leurs partitions avec fougue, brio et une force comique enlevée. L’ensemble compose un spectacle épouvantablement noir, terriblement féroce et formidablement drôle si l’on admet que parfois, il faut bien rire de notre espèce pour n’avoir pas à en pleurer…
