« Lorenzaccio, entré en 1537 au service d’Alexandre de Médicis qui règne sur la ville de Florence, ourdit l’assassinat du tyran afin de libérer sa patrie et de porter au pouvoir les républicains. L’œuvre est organisée entre manipulateurs et manipulés, face au destin. C’est une pièce politique magnifique sur le pouvoir, écrite en français, un événement quand on sait la frilosité de la France à aborder ces sujets dans les arts. Il n’est pas utile d’expliciter longuement Lorenzaccio pour la « réactualiser » et voir des recoupements entre les dirigeants de cette époque et la nôtre. Comment Alexandre une fois au pouvoir peut-il s’entourer si mal ? Ses courtisans ne disent que ce qu’ont envie d’entendre les grands. Mais les personnages de femmes ont leur mot à dire, ce qui est rare dans une pièce politique du XIXe siècle. La mère de Lorenzaccio (Évelyne Istria) est une conscience républicaine forte.
Lorenzaccio commet un crime « révolutionnaire »
Son fils a beaucoup reçu d’elle, elle est en droit d’attendre de le voir réaliser son idée de la République. Comment vivre avec un homme politique ? La vertueuse Marquise Cibo (Océane Mozas) se pose la question à propos du duc. Elle essaie de mener loin son exigence politique, spirituelle et amoureuse. Le personnage de Lorenzaccio (Mathieu Genêt) est fascinant, à la fois ange et démon, porteur de vice et de cette beauté dont parle Rilke : « le beau n’est vraiment que le premier degré du terrible. » Le héros pourrait être un de ces « Malcontents »de France et d’Angleterre, ces jeunes gens affectés de mélancolie, maussades et enclins aux éclats. Lorenzaccio passe à l’acte et commet un crime « révolutionnaire », une forme d’attentat qui de nos jours donne à réfléchir. Le héros « irradie » au sens absolu, il porte passionnément la chaleur ailleurs, et la mort en même temps. Or l’image du rassemblement fait défaut dans cette pièce républicaine. On y voit l’expression de la blessure intérieure d’un être tendu entre deux extrémismes, l’un politique et l’autre artistique puisque le jeune homme « a pris pour un but sublime une route hideuse ».
