André Markowicz, le traducteur d’Un Sapin chez les Ivanov, parle de la langue de Vvedenski comme d’une fabrique de l’impensable. Rien dans ce monde n’est ni stable ni définitif, si ce n’est la mort : « Précisément, quand elle arrive, on ressent la vie dans toute sa force, sa splendeur. » La pièce revêt l’allure d’une fantaisie macabre à l’intérieur d’une famille, à la veille de Noël, en cette fin du XIXe siècle. En l’absence des parents, les enfants prennent leur bain avec la nurse : ils sont sept, âgés de sept à quatre-vingt-deux ans… C’est une logique étonnante qui se tient si l’on suit le jeu de va-et-vient entre le conscient et l’inconscient sur le feuilleté des temps superposés. L’espace panoramique est comparable au mouvement de plongée dans un habitacle rectangulaire, un cercueil, entre formations et déformations de l’imaginaire. Et puis la famille se réunit autour du sapin et quand il s’éteint, enfant et parents disparaissent. Mais avant, il y a eu sur le plateau la force de l’instant poignant, la vérité même du théâtre, la révélation de la vie.
