Si Cheba Fadela est l’une des pionnières du raï féminin, elle se considère elle-même comme la deuxième après Cheikha Rimitti. Elle débuta à la fin des années 70 auprès de Boutaiba S’ghir, qui imposa les bases du raï moderne et qui reste aujourd’hui encore une référence chez les héritiers de cette pop algérienne. Figure oranaise, elle défia la coutume masculine en chantant dans les clubs de la ville. Elle participa à cette époque faste du raï algérien, dans une relative accalmie sociopolitique. L’aura de Fadela a dépassé les frontières dès les années 80, notamment avec le tube N’sel Fik, devenu un standard. Femme de son temps, elle mène depuis les années 90 une carrière solo en France, où l’héritage de la scène oranaise flirte toujours avec une pop électrique et populaire. Autre géant du Raï, Boutaiba S’ghir, natif d’Aïn-Temouchent, cité des poètes de la tradition bédouine oranaise, précurseur de cette musique dès les années 60, est également l’invité de la Maison de la musique de Nanterre le 16.
