Dans Le Songe d’une nuit d’été, c’est la féerie qui est le moteur des désordres amoureux. La forêt d’Obéron et Titania est animée d’un joyeux chaos où les sentiments s’expriment et s’éprouvent en toute fantaisie, sous l’action du lutin Puck. Pas étonnant que l’œuvre continue d’inspirer, siècle après siècle, tous ceux qui veulent représenter les jeux de l’amour dans ce qu’ils ont d’imprévisible, du cinéma d’Ingmar Bergman (Sourires d’une nuit d’été) à Woody Allen (Comédie érotique d’une nuit d’été), jusqu’à l’opéra (Le Songe d’une nuit d’été de Britten, A Little Night Music de Stephen Sondheim). À son tour le metteur en scène Antoine Herbez a adapté la comédie de Shakespeare en l’allégeant, se concentrant sur les poursuites amoureuses. Il s’est pour cela emparé de l’une des toutes premières adaptations musicales de l’œuvre, et de loin la plus célèbre : le « masque » de Henry Purcell, The Fairy Queen, dans une relecture de Didier Benetti pour sept voix et un trio baroque. La pièce devient ainsi une sorte de comédie musicale où s’articulent les mots de Shakespeare et les airs de Purcell. Ce spectacle, encensé par la critique depuis sa création en 2012, revient en Avignon, au Petit Louvre, où le succès était l’an dernier au rendez-vous.
