Plus qu’un festival, Un Violon sur le Sable apparaît dans le paysage musical de l’été comme une fête musicale atypique, un événement classique aux allures de concerts de rock. Chaque concert attire sur la plage de la Grande Conche de Royan 40000 spectateurs en moyenne et c’est au total pas moins de 120 000 mélomanes en maillots de bain (ou presque) qui répondent chaque année à l’appel de ses heureux organisateurs. « Nous sommes loin des programmes traditionnels : le public n’entend pas une symphonie entière, mais des extraits d’oeuvres où se succèdent les plus grands virtuoses » confie Philippe Tranchet, directeur et créateur du festival en 1988. Au programme cette année, autour de l’Orchestre d’Un Violon sur le Sable et accompagnés par le bruit des vagues : André Manoukian, Didier Lockwood, Patricia Petibon, Jean-François Zygel, la jeune trompettiste Lucienne Renaudin Vary, François-René Duchâble, Philippe Jaroussky, Nemanja Radulovic, Khatia Buniatishvili, Camille Thomas, etc. Autant d’artistes au talent incontestable. Un festival populaire au plein et noble sens du terme.
