« Le bûcheron doit couper comme l’enfant doit grandir ». C’est l’enfant lui-même qui parle ainsi au bûcheron, une petite fille déterminée à se battre pour son avenir, qui n’est pas là pour rigoler et parle une langue franche et directe. Elle a besoin de l’arbre pour tailler en son cœur un corset de bois qui lui permettra de marcher et de respirer, car celui qu’elle porte est devenu trop petit. Il ne reste qu’un seul arbre debout, le bûcheron a coupé tous les autres et refuse de sacrifier le dernier. S’il aide la fillette, il mourra. Mais « la petite chenille va ébranler cet homme qui depuis des générations détruit le monde qui l’entoure », confie le metteur en scène Bruno Lajara. Un troisième personnage habite cette fable humaniste, la Présence, figure de l’enfant à l’âge adulte peut-être, figure maternelle imaginaire faisant advenir le passage dans un monde fantastique. Ce spectacle aborde avec délicatesse et clairvoyance les thèmes de la transmission, de l’écologie, de la relation entre les générations, dans une forme et une langue universelles, comprises par les petits et les grands à différents niveaux de lecture.
