Comment est née l’idée de mettre en scène Le Suicidé de Nicolaï Erdman ?
Patrick Pineau : Elle est née de la proposition de Vincent Baudriller et Hortense Archambault de participer à l’édition 2011 du Festival d’Avignon. Depuis une dizaine d’années, les comédiens et les membres de l’équipe artistique avec laquelle je travaille forment, à mes côtés, une sorte de troupe. Afin de répondre à l’invitation qui nous a été faite, nous avons lu diverses pièces et, parmi elles, Le Suicidé. Ce texte traite d’un sujet terriblement drôle – et j’utilise le terme « terriblement » à dessein. Nicolaï Erdman est un grand écrivain. Il a écrit Le Suicidé après Le Mandat, en 1928, au moment où l’URSS commençait à basculer dans le totalitarisme. Cette seconde pièce (qui sera sa dernière) dénonce ce régime d’oppression, le climat délétère qui règne alors dans ce pays. Censuré, arrêté pour un poème satirique écrit sur Staline, exilé pendant plusieurs années, Erdman a vu sa carrière de dramaturge stoppée net. En écrivant Le Suicidé, il s’est d’une certaine façon lui-même suicidé artistiquement. Le Suicidé sera joué pour la première fois en URSS en 1982.
Qui est le personnage central de cette pièce, personnage autour duquel tourne tous les autres protagonistes ?
P. P. : C’est un chômeur, Sémione, un homme qui a perdu son identité, un époux qui a le malheur, une nuit, d’être réveillé par la faim, qui demande alors à sa femme s’il y a quelque chose à manger dans la maison. Il a envie de saucisson. Sa femme lui reproche de l’avoir réveillée, le couple se dispute et Sémione disparaît. Il laisse entendre qu’il pourrait mettre fin à ses jours. Bien sûr, il n’en est rien. C’est le point de départ d’une cascade de réactions qui va amener toutes sortes de personnages à défiler auprès de Sémione, des personnages qui cherchent à le convaincre de se suicider en faveur de leur cause.

Il s’agit d’une pièce qui mêle le grotesque à l’absurde, mais aussi au politique et au métaphysique…
P. P. : Oui, c’est une pièce qui raconte la vie, à travers ses aspects les plus tragiques, mais par le biais du rire. C’est sans doute ce qui me touche le plus, cette faculté à ne jamais tomber dans le désespoir. Le Suicidé agit comme un tourbillon qui nous entraine dans un rythme incroyable, comme une pièce sans virgule qui va directement au point, qui met en place une mécanique implacable. Il y a quelque chose d’envoûtant dans ce texte. Car, Nicolaï Erdman va au-delà de la pure comédie en posant des questions sur l’existence, sur « être ou ne pas être », sur « l’avant et l’après » de la mort… Il y a aussi du Platonov dans le personnage de Sémione, ainsi que du Hamlet. Mais toutes ces interrogations existentielles, métaphysiques, sont abordées de manière très simple, très concrète, à travers des situations qui, parfois, font penser à un rêve. C’est là que, d’une certaine façon, l’univers de Erdman rejoint celui de Kafka.
Quel éclairage souhaitez-vous apporter à cette pièce ?
P. P. : Il y a mille éclairages possibles. On pourrait choisir de faire ressortir la dimension comique, ou la dimension philosophique, ou la dimension kafkaïenne… Ma façon d’aborder les textes est toujours de me laisser guider par l’écriture, d’essayer de faire résonner la partition de la pièce à travers le corps et la personnalité des comédiens. Le guide, c’est l’auteur, c’est son histoire, ce sont ses mots. Il faut travailler à partir de tout cela et tenter d’en faire parvenir la force aux spectateurs. Un peu comme un musicien, finalement. J’aime m’accorder un long temps de travail à la table, afin de comprendre profondément ce qui est dit, afin de lire et relire la pièce, d’en saisir intimement le mécanisme, d’en soulever les pierres et de voir ce qu’il y a dessous. J’espère que nous parviendrons à transmettre tout le trouble que contient Le Suicidé, tout le mystère, toute la fougue et tout le bouillonnement.
