Une des dernières soirées de carnaval nous entraîne chez Zamaria, un tisserand de Venise, aux dernières heures du carnaval qui marquent aussi la fin de la saison théâtrale. Des invités entrent, les uns après les autres. Ils dînent, dansent, rient, jouent aux cartes, parlent d’amour, évoquent le départ du jeune Anzoletto pour Moscou… Rien de véritablement spectaculaire, donc, dans cette comédie de Carlo Goldoni que Clément Hervieu-Léger considère pourtant comme l’une des plus audacieuses, voire des plus modernes du dramaturge vénitien. Une comédie qui rompt avec les archétypes de la Commedia dell’arte pour rejoindre la recherche du naturel théorisée par Molière. C’est d’ailleurs l’auteur de L’Impromptu de Versailles qui a mené le 533ème sociétaire de la Comédie-Française jusqu’au théâtre de Goldoni. « Après Monsieur de Pourceaugnac, explique Clément Hervieu-Léger, j’avais envie de continuer à mettre en scène un groupe, de continuer à interroger les rapports complexes qui régissent toute microsociété. » Une façon d’éclairer la question du commun et de l’individu, de mettre en évidence « l’aspiration de chacun à vivre ensemble et, en même temps à vivre librement ». Une mémorable soirée d’adieu à Venise…
