« Ses personnages sont le plus souvent des poupées qu’il fait danser au-dessus des abîmes, pour rire de la grimace qu’elles y font », disait Zola de son contemporain Labiche. « Son comique est fait des vérités cruelles de la vie ». La remarque sied aussi parfaitement à l’art de Christoph Marthaler, qui adore saisir à la pointe de l’humour le petit monde bourgeois engoncé dans la bienséance des conventions. Pas étonnant donc qu’il soit tout à son aise avec le maître du vaudeville qui n’eut de cesse de croquer avec une gourmandise carnassière les notables pansus régnant sur la France du Second Empire. Le metteur en scène suisse taille notamment dans La poudre aux yeux, réjouissante satire de la vanité ordinaire et du désir de paraître, pour composer une pièce aussi cinglante qu’hilarante. On y voit deux familles, les Malingear, parlant un français châtié, et les Ratinois, ne connaissant que le patois allemand, qui rivalisent de mensonges pour apparier au mieux leurs rejetons. Maniant en virtuose l’art du décalage, Christoph Marthaler révèle le vide effrayant qui étouffe la vie…
