A quelle occasion Barack Obama a-t-il écrit ce remarquable discours ?
José Pliya : Obama a écrit ce discours en mars 2008, en pleine campagne des primaires pour la désignation du candidat démocrate à l’élection présidentielle américaine. Il était dans une dynamique ascensionnelle lorsque ses adversaires, républicains comme démocrates, relayés par les médias, ont diffusé les sermons racistes et antipatriotiques du pasteur de son Eglise. Le scandale fut énorme. Suspicions et doutes commencèrent à peser sur la personnalité et la sincérité du candidat "post racial" Obama. Il lui fallait réagir sous peine de perdre l’élection. Il s’isole et écrit lui-même, en une nuit, ce discours humaniste et universel qui entre immédiatement dans l’Histoire par la grande porte.
Pour quelles raisons avez-vous voulu mettre en scène ce discours ?
J. P. : C’est avant tout pour des raisons intimes et personnelles : j’ai écrit il y a quelques années "Nous étions assis sur le rivage du monde..." où à la question du "vivre ensemble" mes personnages apportaient une fin de non recevoir. Ce n’est pas ma vision du monde, c’est la logique brutale et violente de cette pièce-là. En écoutant ce discours lorsqu’il a été prononcé, j’ai entendu une réponse à cette question qui me convenait pleinement. Je n’aurais pas pu l’écrire, mais elle me convient. J’ai eu envie d’en explorer les fondements politiques et poétiques.

Qui est le comédien ? Comment s’adresse-t-il au public ? Est-on dans l’incarnation ?
J. P. : Eric Delor est martiniquais. Il a joué dans plusieurs de mes pièces. Je l’ai choisi parce qu’il a une présence et une voix. Je l’ai dirigé dans une épure formelle, dans l’effacement du jeu, du geste et du corps. On est dans l’incarnation par la voix. C’est elle et la musicalité particulière que nous lui avons trouvée qui, selon le mot de Claude Régy, "donne à voir" au public. Le spectacle dure 1 heure 10 mn : pendant 40 minutes, Eric s’adresse au public ; pendant 30 minutes le public échange avec lui sur la question du "vivre ensemble" dans notre société. C’est ce qui fait de ce spectacle une performance politico-poétique.
