Who’s there ? Qui est là ? Le premier vers d’Hamlet – direct, simple, laconique et ample de profondeur existentielle – aurait sans doute pu ouvrir les cinq actes d’une autre pièce de Shakespeare : Richard III. Cette mise en scène éblouissante est l’une des créations les plus abouties du metteur en scène Thomas Ostermeier, qui a mené cette tragédie du pouvoir et du désir, interprétée par la troupe de la Schaubühne de Berlin, vers des sommets de force organique, de vérité théâtrale. Tout commence par les mouvements d’une fin de fête. Confettis en pagaille, jusque sur le public. Femmes et hommes en habits de soirée, coupe de champagne à la main. C’est la cour d’Edouard IV qui se trouve projetée dans le bain de notre contemporain. Seule ombre au tableau élégant de cette société aristocratique, un être trouble, énigmatique, marginal fait son entrée. C’est le frère du roi, le duc de Gloucester. Bien des intrigues et des assassinats plus tard, débarrassé de ses ennemis et rivaux, il accédera au trône d’Angleterre sous le nom de Richard III.
Du bouffon séducteur au pantin désarticulé
L’Histoire a retenu du dernier souverain de la maison d’York sa présence difforme de tyran bossu et boiteux. C’est d’ailleurs sous cette allure disgracieuse que se manifeste tout d’abord le Richard III de Thomas Ostermeier. Mais prenant des distances avec les stéréotypes de la monstruosité, le metteur en scène oriente rapidement le personnage vers davantage de complexité. Car plutôt que de le renvoyer à une simple folie sanguinaire, le comédien Lars Eidinger interroge sa personnalité, son identité intime, les paradoxes et les ambiguïtés de son humanité. Qui est là, qui se cache derrière ses attitudes de bouffon à la fois grotesque et machiavélique, sinistre et pourtant séduisant ? Voici la question que pose le directeur artistique de la Schaubühne à travers cette représentation tout en contrastes et en ruptures. Une représentation virtuose dont la théâtralité foisonnante (usage de marionnettes à taille humaine, projection de vidéos, variations de sonorisation, musique live…) ne sombre jamais dans l’hyperbole ou le démonstratif. Équilibré et inspiré, centré sur la puissance vivante de comédiens circulant entre le plateau et la salle, ce Richard III ouvre toutes les possibilités de sens de la pièce de Shakespeare. Et impose l’idée de maestria.
