« L’histoire est racontée comme un conte, déclare Marc Delaruelle. Malgré son sujet relativement grave, on y retrouve la légèreté, la fantaisie et la liberté des “il était une fois…” ». Pièce intimiste qui se déroule « en plein vent, en pleine nuit, au milieu d’une mer déchainée », texte conçu « comme une musique de chambre » déployant « la mélodie de ses phrases et le rythme de ses séquences », Une Valise à la mer relate la rencontre entre un homme (Patrice Ricci) et une femme (Claude Mailhon) sans noms. Un homme et une femme esseulés, intemporels, qui ont « l’âge où l’on commence à faire le bilan sans pour autant penser à la fin ». A travers cette histoire d’amour à la fois triviale et lyrique, tangible et imaginaire, Marc Delaruelle a souhaité éclairer les difficultés de communiquer en amour, les appréhensions et les inquiétudes qui peuvent maintenir certains êtres au sein d’une existence solitaire.
