En 1987, quelques semaines avant la mort de Copi, sa pièce Une Visite inopportune est créée par Jorge Lavelli à la Colline. Dans la mise en scène de Philippe Calvario, Michel Fau interprète aujourd’hui le rôle de Cyrille, hospitalisé pour cause de sida, comédien mythomane grotesque, qui fête le deuxième anniversaire de sa maladie. Une infirmière invraisemblable et tonique fumant de l’opium (Sissi Duparc) soigne le patient, de même qu’un professeur de médecine bouffon, fétichiste et lubrique (Louis Arene). Le vieil ami Hubert (Éric Guého) est aux côtés du moribond, un rien désuet et mélancolique mais complètement loufoque et allumé, fou amoureux comme au premier jour de celui qui joua Hamlet ou Richard III. L’intrigue avance, les visiteurs se font plus étranges. Un jeune journaliste ((Lionel Lingelser), timoré à l’excès, se fait annoncer. Puis, arrive avec fracas une diva italienne, une cantatrice tonitruante – Marianne James qui chante sur scène -, une figure grandiose et passionnée de l’amour et de la mort, sœur prémonitoire et fatale du destin du héros. Tous ces masques grimaçants et toutes ces créatures difformes et comiques révèlent le goût théâtral de l’absurde et de la dérision propres à l’écriture de Copi.
Une réponse spirituelle
La comédie met en lumière les scènes parodiques et incongrues de la réalité du sida à travers l’outrance, l’invraisemblance et le ridicule. Les traitements sont pénibles, les médicaments peu efficaces, la trithérapie n’est pas apparue encore dans la lutte contre la maladie, et beaucoup sont condamnés. Les remarques cyniques des personnages jalonnent la pièce :« Vous ne risquez rien en me baisant la main » ou bien « Vous avez de la chance d’avoir le sida, ils sont tous morts vos amis. » À l’origine, la révélation d’un rapport entre l’homosexualité et le risque de transmission du sida a été utilisée de manière irrationnelle pour stigmatiser les relations homosexuelles masculines. Voilà pourquoi la verve fantastique, drôle, leste ou triviale d’Une Visite inopportune est une réponse spirituelle à la volonté de marginalisation de la différence et à l’intolérance du temps. La pièce a également valeur historique de témoignage quant à l’expansion du sida et à la lutte contre la mortalité en Afrique : il est urgent de bâtir les dispensaires de premiers secours et de prévention. Hervé Guibert écrit en 1990 : « C’était une maladie qui donnait le temps de mourir, et qui donnait à la mort le temps de vivre, le temps de découvrir le temps et de découvrir enfin la vie, c’était en quelque sorte une géniale invention moderne que nous avaient transmise ces singes verts d’Afrique. » Calvario donne à la problématique de douleur un univers coloré de créatures à la silhouette burlesque.
