Pour oser revendiquer une création sur le thème de l’amour, il faut de la conviction – ou tout au moins une forme de naïveté, ou de fraîcheur. Abou Lagraa a sans doute tout cela, et il est en outre persuadé que l’on peut questionner à la fois l’amour et l’identité, l’évidence des racines et le trouble de l’émotion. Dans Univers… l’Afrique, il se glisse ainsi dans les pas de Nina Simone, qui revendiqua son africanité dans des chansons qui comptent parmi les plus beaux chants d’amour. La pièce se compose de deux parties : dans la première, deux générations de danseurs – un duo d’une soixantaine d’années, un autre d’une trentaine d’années – explorent le sentiment amoureux et le dépassement de soi auquel il nous conduit. La seconde a été chorégraphiée pour les danseurs du Ballet contemporain d’Alger : un quatuor qui explore les danses rituelles et l’extase, et qui se veut, pour le chorégraphe, une introspection intime de ses racines.
