De quoi se compose votre spectacle Urgent crier ! ?
Philippe Caubère : Depuis longtemps, je voulais dire des textes de Benedetto dans son Théâtre des Carmes. Je ne savais pas que ce serait sa mort qui m’en donnerait l’opportunité. Le spectacle est un portrait de l’homme de théâtre engagé, d’après un montage de quelques-uns de ses textes. Il s’agit de textes sur le théâtre, l’un sur Jean Vilar – un acteur du sud – et le Festival d’Avignon, un autre sur Artaud et Marseille, un Magnificat enfin pour le critique Gilles Sandier. Ces trois textes sont enchâssés dans la poésie révolutionnaire des années 60 qui font l’éloge et raillent les Beatnicks, les Événements de 68 et le Festival. Des écrits de jeunesse s’entremêlent avec ceux de la maturité. Benedetto représente un premier maître que j’admire beaucoup.
Comment l’idée même du spectacle s’est-elle imposée ?
Ph. C. : C’est le texte polémique de Benedetto sur Vilar qui a initié l’entreprise. Soit une vision subversive qui tape juste et fort sur le Théâtre et le Festival. Urgent Crier ! repose sur cette volonté d’exprimer à Avignon la nature profonde du Festival. Jean Vilar est un acteur méditerranéen qui a fondé un festival à Avignon. Pour ce qui concerne Sandier, le Magnificat est l’éloge funèbre que Benedetto a joué avec un acteur du Soleil dans les jardins du Festival. Sandier était un éclaireur, défenseur d’un théâtre politique, un théâtre d’art, disparu au début des années Mitterrand. L’idée m’a plu qu’une figure de journaliste soit célébrée dans cet éloge du théâtre.

Comment votre talent d’acteur va-t-il être mis à contribution ?
Ph. C. : Je vais improviser, sortir du texte, ne pas jouer au mot près. Je voudrais jouer Benedetto, le faire revivre, comme j’ai fait jouer ma mère ou bien Ariane Mnouchkine. Je rappellerai son accent, ses regards, sa façon d’être et sa psychologie. Urgent Crier ! est à la fois un bel hommage et un acte d’amour.
Vous vous réclamez de cette même culture originelle et méditerranéenne ?
Ph. C. : Je mets davantage en lumière le rôle central de l’acteur au théâtre. Le Festival a été créé par un acteur ; ce n’est pas une idée de metteur en scène au départ, ni de directeur de colonie de vacances, ni d’homme d’affaires, ni d’élu. Vilar était un acteur méditerranéen, debout face au mur du sud, au mistral de la Cour d’Honneur. L’origine du Festival n’est pas conventionnelle, mais extrêmement physique et vivante. Quant à Artaud dont l’identité est provençale, il est mis en relation avec Marseille et la peste. J’interprète ce fou, ce possédé, le corps sur un trépied, lourd de sa souffrance, de ses cris, de la création vivante dans son corps.
Quelle est la tonalité du spectacle ?
Ph. C. : La représentation revêt des aspects flamboyants et rock and roll, avec la guitare électrique de Jérémy Campagne. Il y a aussi les proférations des années 60/70, de la Beat Generation, du psychédélisme… J’avais 16 ou 17 ans, ce furent les années de ma jeunesse et de la subversion éternelle, une époque que les jeunes d’aujourd’hui ne cessent d’interroger pour savoir. Benedetto a écrit le 31 juillet 68 un texte fort sur sa déception totale à l’issue des Événements de 68. Je veux raconter cette histoire-là aux jeunes, une histoire qui leur appartient de plein droit …
