Le pianiste new yorkais s’est aujourd’hui fait une spécialité des relectures audacieuses de répertoires de référence du jazz ou de la musique classique, de Monk à Fats Waller et de Mahler (dès 1995 sur la scène de la Knitting Factory de New York) à, comme ici, Mozart. Empruntant à quelques-unes des œuvres les plus populaires du génial viennois (Symphonies n°40 et 41, Quintette avec clarinette, Marche Turque, airs de Don Giovanni et de La Flûte Enchantée, etc…), ce projet décomplexé se développe avec pour seul guide le double plaisir de faire sonner un grand ensemble d’élite sur des compositions magnifiques et de laisser libre cours à sa fièvre improvisatrice. En deuxième partie, Carla Bley herself, et son projet "The Lost Chords find Paolo Fresu", écho scénique d’un disque superbe de 2007. Un quintet de solistes d’exception est sur scène autour de la grande dame avec Paolo Fresu (trompette), Andy Sheppard (saxophone), Billy Drummond (batterie) et Steve Swallow (basse).
