Chassé de son pays par les talibans, installé au Pakistan à la fin des années 1990, puis aujourd’hui après un bref retour à Kaboul en Allemagne à Francfort-sur-le-Main, Ustâd Gholâm Hussein est né en 1960. Il est considéré comme le grand spécialiste de sa génération du rubâb, luth afghan traditionnel en bois de mûrier. Si Ustâd Gholâm Hussein ne rechigne jamais à s’investir dans des rencontres avec des musiciens d’horizons différents, il reste avant tout attaché à l’exploration et à la défense du répertoire classique des traditions musicales afghanes. Il dialogue ici avec un autre Maître, Ustâd Gholâm Nejrawi, virtuose du tambour zerbaghali et grand improvisateur, lui aussi installé en Europe, à Strasbourg. Complices de longue date, ils ont beaucoup joué ensemble en Afghanistan jusque dans les années 1980, avant de se perdre de vue. Leurs routes viennent de se recroiser et ils n’ont pas tardé à renouer le fil d’un dialogue musical intense, dans un programme de râga et tâla du répertoire classique afghan, de chansons populaires, et de leurs propres compositions.
