Si la fougue, l’imagination, le charisme de Valery Gergiev font l’unanimité, son soutien enthousiaste à Vladimir Poutine fait évidemment davantage débat. Sa tournée américaine au début de l’année 2015 a d’ailleurs été émaillée de plusieurs interventions d’opposants au président russe. Invité de l’Orchestre de Paris, pour un des concerts les plus attendus (et donc peut-être déjà complet à l’heure où paraissent ces lignes) de la saison de la formation parisienne, il dirige le Double Concerto de Brahms (avec Sergey Khachatryan et Narek Hakhnazaryan en solistes) et la Symphonie fantastique de Berlioz, compositeur avec lequel il est lié par une affinité profonde. « Les Russes ont compris Berlioz avant les Français. Ils ont admiré sa musique lorsqu’elle était huée en France. Ce que j’aime dans sa musique, c’est que tout se passe dans l’instant, il est comme un volcan en éruption. Berlioz est un rêveur, il ne peut jamais atteindre le bonheur qu’il se fixe… » déclarait Gergiev en 2013 au Guardian. La Symphonie fantastique est tout de même aussi l’une des œuvres fétiches des musiciens parisiens, en particulier depuis l’enregistrement historique de Charles Munch en 1967 aux premières heures du tout jeune Orchestre de Paris…
