Compositeur important de la Russie soviétique, Rodion Chtchedrine (né en 1932) demeure peu connu en France, malgré l’énergie déployée par quelques-uns de ses amis interprètes, au premier rang desquels figurait Mstislav Rostropovitch. Valery Gergiev reprend donc le flambeau, secondé par les forces vives du Théâtre Mariinski de Saint-Pétersbourg (orchestre, chœur, solistes et ballet), pour deux soirées à ne pas manquer au Théâtre du Châtelet. Le ballet de jeunesse Le Petit Cheval bossu est un bon témoignage du style du compositeur : une musique tonale, riche en couleurs et empruntant volontiers aux folklores. Son quatrième opéra, Le Vagabond ensorcelé d’après une nouvelle picaresque de Leskov, créé en 2002 par Lorin Maazel, montre une belle intensité dramatique soutenue par l’orchestre et le chœur au moins autant que par les solistes.
