Trois des œuvres au programme de ce court cycle Stravinsky sont originellement destinées à la scène. Toutes ont cependant trouvé leur place au concert, tel Petrouchka, chronologiquement le second des grands « ballets russes » du compositeur (après L’Oiseau de feu et avant Le Sacre du printemps) créés à Paris au début des années 1910. Noces, en 1923, conclut cette période avec son orchestration surprenante, d’un modernisme particulièrement efficace : quatre pianos et des percussions, accordées ou non. Après avoir ainsi contribué à fonder la modernité musicale, Stravinsky s’oriente vers un langage empruntant davantage au classicisme, à la virtuosité instrumentale (Capriccio pour piano et petit orchestre) et affichant volontiers un certain hiératisme, dans la Symphonie de psaumes (1930) et plus encore dans l’« opéra-oratorio » Œdipus Rex (1927) où la narration en français (confiée ici à Gérard Depardieu) vient entrecouper les scènes de la tragédie de Sophocle, adaptées en latin par Jean Cocteau et Jean Daniélou et traitées dans un sens tout monumental.
