Un monde en pleine mutation, sociale, économique et politique, un monde où le désir de lendemains meilleurs et le désir d’en finir avec une vie étriquée et monotone se heurtent à de multiples obstacles. La belle première image de la pièce mise en scène par Gilberte Tsaï laisse voir un monde bientôt englouti. Une pile de cartons en transit, dans un monde lui-même dans une phase transitoire incertaine qui laisse voir toutes les mesquineries et les violences d’une humanité blessée et déchue. Pas de Cerisaie ici, mais une affaire familiale susceptible d’être liquidée. La mère Vassa, combative et déterminée, domine tous les autres personnages. « Trente ans de labeur et tout va partir en fumée », dit Vassa, qui va tout faire pour contrer le destin, et elle est armée pour cela d’une intelligence et d’un pragmatisme redoutables. Le père absent de la scène se meurt, l’oncle Prokhor veut récupérer sa mise, les trois enfants désenchantés n’ont pas encore de place dans cette société. Pavel, laid et handicapé, a épousé la jeune Ludmila, qui le déteste et rêve de prendre son envol, Sémione et sa femme Natalia attendent de récupérer le butin, la fille Anna tente de démêler les enjeux…
Rétive à la pauvreté de l’esprit
Une famille désunie, sur la défensive, qui s’affronte et se déchire. La metteuse en scène a choisi la version de 1910, et non pas celle de 1936, plus connue, car elle « a les aspects d’un matériau brut », « d’un drame rapide, presque sec parfois ». L’écriture de Gorki, directe et frontale, est certes moins subtile, moins tendre et moins profonde que celle de Tchekhov, et lors de la scène inaugurale, on craint que les personnages ne s’enferment dans une caractérisation psychologique trop outrée et trop visible. Mais au fil des trois actes, d’une mise en scène classique qui se concentre sur le jeu d’acteurs, l’oeuvre gagne en intensité et en fluidité. Ce qui permet à la pièce de ne pas se réduire à une guerre trop rude et brutale, c’est l’interprétation remarquable de Christiane Cohendy, qui malgré sa puissance de mère, chef de famille et chef d’entreprise, et ses choix cruels, laisse voir à chaque instant une tendresse et une dignité intactes. Elle est sans illusion, cynique et extra lucide, mais aussi infiniment triste d’en arriver là, rétive à la pauvreté de l’esprit : un beau personnage, contradictoire et émouvant. Des traits comiques fusent aussi. On ne peut s’empêcher de penser à l’existence de Gorki, depuis une enfance orpheline soumise à de très dures conditions de travail, que sa grand-mère a adoucie, jusqu’à la fin “glorieuse“ sous Staline. Une existence russe, ardente, tragique et extrême !
