Faisant suite aux événements organisés, en 2004, lorsque Lille jouissait du titre de Capitale Européenne de la culture, le programme Lille3000 – Europe XXL a été imaginé comme la traversée d’un nouveau continent : le continent d’une Europe transfigurée, il y a tout juste 20 ans, par la chute du mur de Berlin. Au cœur de la vie artistique de sa région, le Théâtre du Nord prend part à cette manifestation printanière en présentant Vents d’Est, projet théâtral que le metteur en scène (et directeur du Théâtre du Nord) Stuart Seide a conçu comme une fenêtre « permettant d’entrevoir ces sociétés qui nous sont à la fois proches et lointaines », mais également comme un miroir« qui pourrait nous donner à nous voir nous-mêmes ». « De cette Europe qui est à l’est de la nôtre, nous connaissons peu, ou mal, le passé, les penseurs, les artistes et leur façon de voir le monde, explique-t-il. Nous avons pourtant une histoire commune, des préoccupations communes et, qu’on le veuille ou non, nous avons un avenir commun. »

Ainsi, c’est sur les terres de cette Europe-là que Vents d’Est se propose de nous faire voyager. Comment les bouleversements qui ont traversé ces pays se sont-ils exprimés dans leur théâtre ? Comment voit-on, là-bas, le moment charnière que nous vivons aujourd’hui ? Pour tenter de répondre à ces questions, ces Vents d’Est proposent de découvrir des spectacles hongrois (Korcula*, de l’auteur-metteur en scène Béla Pintér ; Ivanov* d’Anton Tchekhov, mis en scène par Tamás Ascher), croates (S Druge Strane*, création écrite et mis en scène par Natasa Rajkovic et Bobo Jelcic), polonais (Transfer !*, de l’auteur-metteur en scène Jan Klata) et macédoniens (Quel est l’enfoiré qui a commencé le premier, de Dejan Dukovski, mis en scène par Stuart Seide). Cette dernière proposition, seule représentation en langue française, correspond au spectacle de sortie de la deuxième promotion de l’Epsad**. Un croisement artistique envisagé, par Stuart Seide, comme une manière de permettre à des élèves-acteurs qui se sont immergés pendant trois ans dans la vie culturelle lilloise, de s’impliquer à leur tour dans celle-ci, de rendre à cette cité un peu de ce qu’elle leur a donné.
