Arrachée à son pays natal, l’Afrique du Sud, pour être exhibée en Europe, celle qui fut surnommée la Vénus Hottentote est morte en France en 1815. Son corps, disséqué et exposé au Musée de l’Homme à Paris jusque dans les années 1970, restera l’un des symboles de la barbarie colonialiste. « Vénus, il était une fois signifie maintenant, est un conte qui mêle différentes voix venues d’ailleurs et d’âges différents, révèle Frédéric Maragnani. C’est un conte de fées à l’envers où la fée est un corps aux formes généreuses et à la peau noire. » Rejoignant la question du champ et du hors-champ, l’une des préoccupations récurrentes de son travail, le metteur en scène envisage cette histoire comme un creuset d’inventions et de fantasmagories à travers lesquelles il a souhaité créer une épopée théâtrale des mots. Une épopée parlée, mais aussi chantée, musicalisée et chorégraphiée.
