Exilée par force de son pays natal, transformée en phénomène de foire, contrainte d’exhiber ses fesses, convoquée par le tribunal pour atteinte à la pudeur, relâchée et rachetée par le Baron Docteur qui l’amène à Paris pour l’étudier et en fait sa maîtresse, Vénus finit sur la table de dissection de celui qu’elle aimait, bien loin des « cocotiers absents de la superbe Afrique », comme le pleurait Baudelaire… Suzan-Lori Parks raconte l’histoire de Saartjie Baartman, partie, leurrée par des promesses de célébrité, de richesse et d’amour, pour l’Europe, et qui mourut, à vingt-six ans, désillusionnée et trahie. « C’est sur le tempo du music-hall, dans l’ambiance surchauffée d’une baraque foraine et à la folle cadence d’un train fantôme que se déroule cette brève et tragique existence. », dit Cristèle Alves Meira, qui met en scène ce texte au phrasé percutant, dont « les envolées lyriques sont cueillies par le punch d’une série d’uppercuts ». Une odyssée fantastique, fascinante et puissamment réflexive.
