Une date noire et lourde de conséquences, celle de janvier 1933 qui sonne
lugubrement la venue de Hitler au pouvoir comme chancelier du Reich. Dès le 10
mai, les livres sont brûlés sur la place publique dont les ?uvres dramatiques de
von Horvath à qui l’on interdit aussi les scènes allemandes. Celui-ci parle de
sa pièce Vers les cieux comme d’une comédie féerique sans tours de magie,
la forme adéquate rêvée qui permet de dire ce que l’on n?oserait exprimer. Un
directeur de théâtre, arrivé au terme de son contrat avec le Diable, marchande
un sursis en échange d’une âme pour l’éternité : celle de Louise, jeune
chanteuse prête à tout pour devenir diva. L’?uvre verse du côté du conte amer,
du mélodrame social, de la satire tragico-comique, du délire fantastique. Une
pièce inclassable qui s’insurge contre toute forme de censure, et qui ?uvre,
comme le veut l’auteur, à ce que « la patrie » soit « le peuple » et le pays,
l’esprit, contre tous les nationalismes.
