Le festival, qui investit différents lieux (Opéra royal, Chapelle royale, Galerie des glaces), met l’accent sur la découverte de l’Italie par le jeune Haendel, qui y séjourne de 1706 à 1710. Les concerts font ainsi entendre divers aspects de la production de Haendel lors de son voyage en Italie, entre musique sacrée et œuvres profanes. Le 22 juin, John Eliot Gardiner dirige le Dixit Dominus, premier chef-d’œuvre composé à Rome, qu’il met en regard de l’une des premières œuvres de Bach (la cantate Christ lag in Todebanden) et du grand motet In convertendo de Rameau (Harry Christophers dirige à son tour le Dixit Dominus le 1er juillet, et la confrontation des styles sera intéressante). Fabio Bonizzoni fait quant à lui entendre le premier oratorio composé par Haendel à Rome, Il Trionfo del Tempo e del disinganno, avec son ensemble La Risonanza et un beau quatuor vocal emmené par Roberta Invernizzi (6 juillet). En miroir, Versailles accueille également les chefs-d’œuvre de la maturité, en particulier ceux composés pour Londres, tel Le Messie (par The Sixteen et Harry Christophers, le 2 juillet). Enfin, Jordi Savall propose une « nuit Haendel » (le 27 juin), de la Water Music à l’Opéra royal à la Royal Fireworks Music à la Galerie des glaces en passant par un concerto grosso en la Chapelle royale.
