Théâtre et musique ne s’opposent pas chez Jean-Pierre Drouet. Ce musicien épris de mots s’est d’ailleurs choisi pour instrument le plus théâtral de tous, la percussion, et c’est auprès de pionniers du théâtre musical tels Georges Aperghis ou Mauricio Kagel qu’il développe son langage. « Le théâtre musical est un genre délicieux où les mots se font musique, où le chant, le cri, surgissent de la nécessité même de la parole, quand elle ne peut plus se suffire ». Christine Dormoy définit ainsi l’étrange objet qu’est Vertiges – et sa version de chambre, Vertiges II, présentée ici. Avec sa Compagnie Le Grain, elle est l’initiatrice de l’œuvre en 2001 aux côtés de Jean-Pierre Drouet et du poète Patrick Kermann. Sur scène, postés au bord d’un gouffre, sept acteurs, également chanteurs et musiciens, confrontent leurs angoisses, leurs émotions, avec quatre chanteurs lyriques, sous le regard attentif de quatre instrumentistes, commentateurs burlesques de la gravité du monde.
