Pépite un peu cachée dans la foisonnante programmation 2011 de Banlieues Bleues, ce trio inventé par Vijay Iyer en 1997, suite à une commande pour la célébration des 60 ans de l’indépendance de l’Inde, repose sur l’association avec deux musiciens indiens installés aux Etats-Unis : le guitariste Prasanna et le joueur de tablas Nitin Mitta. Trois électrons libres… Le leader du projet, qui a été désigné en 2010 comme musicien de l’année par les Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Awards, réfute, on s’en doute, la notion de fusion pour désigner sa démarche artistique : « Jazz et musique indienne sont des étiquettes qui décrivent imparfaitement ces deux immenses systèmes d’information, zones d’activité, champs de possible » confie Iyer. « Ce sont des traditions « vastes comme la nature elle-même » pour citer Julius Hemphill : l’une comme l’autre incarnent l’imposant testament qui leur a été respectivement légué, elles évoluent, elles s’adaptent, elles annoncent perpétuellement ce qui est encore à venir ». Un trio captivant et sans compromis. En deuxième partie : le duo Michel Portal-Bernard Lubat.
