Ce qui s’impose à la réflexion de Vivant – titre de la pièce d’Annie Zadek – c’est l’idée du choix de vie et du sens qu’on veut donner à son existence. Que veut dire « être en vie » quand tout dépend du genre de présence au monde dont on dispose, du sens qu’on reconnaît à ses jours ou du non-sens qu’on pourrait leur découvrir ? « Quelle vie ! La vraie vie est absente. Nous ne sommes pas au monde », écrit Arthur Rimbaud dans Une saison en enfer. La vie est aisément prosaïque et non poétique. L’écrivain (Hervé Pierre) est un marginal épuisé, un citoyen usé mis au ban de la société qui s’apprête à mourir. Déchiré de contradictions, l’exclu reste meurtri par les déceptions et les trahisons, les siennes comme celles d’autrui. Le flâneur des rues maudit une vie sans douceur, pleine de vodka et de plaisirs nocturnes. L’homme de l’écrit a cru faussement à l’illusion du dénuement et de l’austérité dans la journée et aux bienfaits des excès autorisés par l’art, le soir. Il est préférable d’arrêter d’écrire pour « être » à travers un travail manuel. L’artiste a eu le tort de prendre sa vie privilégiée pour matériau : « Mais comment concilier le grand air d’Othello chanté par Rubini et la misère dans nos campagnes ?»
Des masques blêmes qui crient en silence leur douleur
Ce qui subsiste en dépit de tout, c’est le désir amoureux pour la femme. Elle (Julie Sicard) est sur le plateau, silhouette muette et sombre, une figure mortuaire qui prépare le corps sans vie à entrer au royaume des morts. Au fil du récit, la servante se métamorphose en allégorie de la vie, une jolie rousse enceinte, le ventre protubérant dans une petite robe ajustée à fleurs colorées. L’espace conçu par Pierre Meunier est une sorte d’enfer nocturne radieux, situé sous une voie de chemin de fer qui laisse courir le bruit strident des trains qui passent. L’atmosphère dégagée est étrange et onirique, le sol est parsemé d’objets rudimentaires de récupération, couvertures, tentures, voiles et cordages, cadres de bois, panneaux avec une fresque peinte en fond de scène – des arbres sous un ciel de nuages. Pour évoquer le malheur du monde, dans l’ombre d’une fenêtre ouverte surgissent des marionnettes, des masques blêmes qui crient en silence leur douleur. Hervé Pierre pèse de son poids d’existence humaine, communiquant au spectateur sa fureur de vivre. Si la sagesse chinoise refuse que la vie soit la propriété de quiconque, elle appartient en tout cas à ce rêve scénique. Une oraison funèbre magnifique.
