PIANO ET ORCHESTRE SYMPHONIQUE / THEATRE DES CHAMPS-ELYSEES
Si la musique pour piano de Rachmaninov, ses deuxième et troisième concertos avant tout, comptent parmi les œuvres les plus célèbres de la musique russe, sa musique strictement orchestrale – ses trois symphonies, son poème symphonique L’Île des morts, les Danses Symphoniques, etc. – reste étrangement délaissée. Ce concert met deux des partitions du compositeur russe dans les mains d’un interprète qui, d’abord pianiste, puis chef d’orchestre, n’a cessé de s’efforcer d’en révéler la beauté et la portée. Un coffret de 11 CD chez Decca consacré à l’intégrale de l’œuvre pour piano (dont les concertos enregistrés avec le London Symphony Orchestra dirigé par Andre Previn en 1970) mais aussi ses sublimes et historiques symphonies à la tête de l’orchestre du Concertgebouw d’Amsterdam, témoignent avec force de cet engagement. Vladimir Ashkenazy sera pour cette soirée unique avenue Montaigne à la tête du prestigieux et londonien Philharmonia Orchestra pour diriger la Deuxième Symphonie, la plus célèbre de ces trois partitions discrètes, puis le Premier Concerto, avec en soliste le russe Boris Berezovsky, autre familier de Rachmaninov. Un tandem idéal.
