À l’instar de John Williams ou Ennio Morricone, Vladimir Cosma est l’une des grandes figures de la musique pour le cinéma. Dans les années soixante-dix et quatre-vingt, il a apposé sa signature symphonique aux grands succès populaires d’Yves Robert, Édouard Molinaro, Gérard Oury ou Claude Zidi. Aujourd’hui, Vladimir Cosma apparaît moins au générique des films, même s’il demeure le compositeur attitré de ceux de Jean-Pierre Mocky. Cela tient à la relative désaffection des producteurs pour l’outil symphonique et à l’apparition de nouveaux noms (Jean-Claude Petit, puis Laurent Petitgirard ou Bruno Coulais), ainsi qu’aux projets personnels du compositeur : son opéra Marius et Fanny d’après Pagnol a été créé en 2007 à l’Opéra de Marseille. En attendant, c’est bien ses grands succès, tels Rabbi Jacob, Le Grand Blond avec une chaussure noire, La Boum ou Diva que Vladimir Cosma défend à la tête de l’Orchestre national d’Île-de-France.
