Crise financière oblige, la concurrence entre les orchestres privés londoniens est plus que jamais exacerbée. Chacun rivalise d’ambition artistique et de projets en tous genres (pédagogique, crossover…) pour séduire le public. Les mélomanes parisiens, habitués à entendre le London Symphony Orchestra, en résidence à la Salle Pleyel, pourront faire la comparaison avec le London Philharmonic Orchestra. Cette phalange est dirigée depuis l’année dernière par un chef exceptionnel : Vladimir Jurowski. Ce maestro russe de 37 ans dirige aussi bien des ensembles sur instruments anciens (il est régulièrement invité à l’Orchestre de l’Age des Lumières) que des productions du grand répertoire lyrique (il est depuis 2001 directeur musical du Festival de Glyndebourne). Le concert du Théâtre des Champs-Elysées confronte deux sommets de la musique romantique : le Concerto pour piano n°2 de Brahms (avec en soliste Nicholas Angelich, au jeu à la fois puissant et intérieur) et la Symphonie n°6 « Pathétique » de Tchaïkovski.
