Depuis leur naissance en 1994, les Voice Messengers ont connu plusieurs vies, plusieurs formes, plusieurs tailles, plusieurs invités de marque (Glenn Ferris, Steve Lacy, Antoine Hervé) avant de s’arrêter il y a six ans sur une formule à huit chanteurs accompagnés d’un trio piano-basse-batterie. Le pianiste, arrangeur, compositeur et créateur du groupe, Thierry Lalo, le confirme : « j’ai trouvé un équilibre que je ne veux plus changer. J’ai à la fois une relative légèreté, plein de possibilités de mettre en valeur le talent et la personnalité de chacun, tout en ayant quand même l’ampleur d’un grand ensemble. Si je faisais quelque chose avec seulement quatre chanteurs et une rythmique, ce serait un groupe vocal comme les New York Voices. C’est très bien, mais j’affectionne tellement l’énergie du big band que je ne pourrais jamais me passer du swing de la batterie par exemple. Un big band sans batterie, c’est une fanfare et ce n’est plus du tout la même chose ! » Car le fondateur des Voice Messengers insiste : « c’est un orchestre avant tout, ce n’est ni une comédie musicale, ni du théâtre musical ! »
Faire swinguer la langue française
Certes le spectacle « est mis en lumière et en espace », mais ce big band vocal reste fidèle à son credo : mélanger arrangements originaux de standards du jazz et compositions signées Thierry Lalo sur des grands poèmes français. Ce qui permet de pointer l’une des spécificités principales de ces messagers de la voix : faire swinguer la langue française tels les vers de Verlaine, Baudelaire ou Milosz. Et si la formation baptise son nouveau répertoire « Back in Town » (« c’est un mélange entre nos anciens disques et le prochain, mais on défend toujours la même esthétique »), il faut y voir une double référence : « on est basé à Paris, mais on n’y joue que rarement, la dernière fois c’était en 2007. C’est une manière de dire qu’on revient à la maison ! » Et c’est aussi l’occasion de faire un clin d’œil à un nouvel arrangement écrit par Thierry Lalo sur une vieille chanson américaine popularisée par le pianiste Thelonious Monk, Lulu’s back in town. Pendant deux jours, il sera donc possible de voir les Voice Messengers jouer à domicile avant qu’ils ne s’envolent une fois encore pour l’Allemagne, l’Estonie ou encore la Lettonie.
