Comment avez-vous découvert ce texte de Carlos Eugenio Lopez ?
Eva Vallejo : Au détour de nos habituelles explorations chez les libraires, avec Bruno Soulier, nous sommes tombés sur cet auteur et sur ce texte. La forme originale de ce roman, uniquement dialogué, nous a permis d’aborder le dialogue, que nous n’avions jamais travaillé. Son style, qui rappelle celui de Rodrigo Garcia, dont nous avions monté Jardinage humain, est marqué par ce même humanisme sulfureux et provocateur, fait de profondeur et de trivialité, d’humour noir et de métaphysique, très rentre-dedans.
Que raconte le spectacle ?
E. V. : C’est un road movie, un voyage au bout de la nuit fait par deux assassins qui, tous les week-ends, transportent, de Madrid au détroit de Gibraltar, le cadavre d’un arabe qu’ils ont tué dans une baignoire d’eau salée, et qu’ils jettent à la mer pour faire croire qu’il s’est noyé. C’est leur vingt-neuvième voyage. Mais pendant ce voyage, la machine se grippe et ils commencent à philosopher, entre platitudes et clichés, mensonges et vérités. Ils évoquent l’amour, le sexe, la guerre, la mort, le rapport à la maladie, l’euthanasie, le politique. C’est à la fois horrible et drôle.
Quel traitement dramaturgique et scénique en proposez-vous ?
E. V. : L’auteur a une formation de lettres classiques, et il a beaucoup travaillé sur le dialogue socratique. Le texte avance essentiellement par questions, comme si toute réponse n’était que mensonge. Le texte a été adapté et réduit à un tiers de sa longueur initiale. Nous avons apporté un changement très important. Dans le roman, c’est l’homme le plus âgé qui ouvre le questionnement. Nous avons voulu inverser ce rapport car nous trouvions plus intéressant que les questions viennent du plus jeune. Nous avons traité le texte comme un livret d’opéra. Il y a une régie sonore très développée, et Bruno Soulier accompagne le jeu en direct au plateau, sur ses claviers numériques. Nous avons voulu que adopter la forme d’un road movie cinématographique. L’espace scénique est celui d’une voiture non réaliste, traitée en objet sculpté et amputée de divers éléments. La voiture tourne, comme si la caméra tournait autour de la voiture. Il y a des pauses, comme lors d’un long voyage en voiture, et les deux hommes réalisent un parcours qui est l’occasion, pour le spectateur, de faire son propre chemin, sans morale ni leçon.
