Qu’est-ce qui est à l’origine de Temps ? Et comment s’est construit le projet avec l’équipe ?
Wajdi Mouawad : La pièce est née grâce à une carte blanche proposée par Gil Champagne du Théâtre du Trident à Québec. Pour que l’aventure soit différente de celle du Sang des Promesses, j’ai eu le désir de travailler autrement : requestionner le mode de fonctionnement, s’obliger à réinventer… Je voulais arriver en répétitions avec rien, ou presque ; mettant un couvercle sur ma tête comme sur une marmite dans laquelle il y a de l’eau bouillante, dont s’échappe malgré tout un peu de vapeur. Je suis donc arrivé en création avec juste cette vapeur, mais rien dans les poches. Le travail s’est fait avec légèreté, et l’urgence y a été maîtresse : sur les cinq semaines de répétitions, plus de deux ont été consacrées à des discussions autour de la table et des recherches sur le plateau. Nous avons ensuite créé des images, des scènes, à assembler plus tard comme un puzzle.
Temps se situe dans une ville réelle, Fermont, au Nord du Québec à la frontière du Labrador. Pourquoi avoir choisi cette ville ?
W. M. : Fermont est une ville dédiée à l’exploitation de la mine du Mont Wright. On l’appelle « la ville mur » : les températures peuvent y descendre jusqu’à – 60° et pour lutter contre la violence des vents, un mur écran a été construit. La promiscuité, la rudesse des éléments extérieurs, le travail, font que pour chacun, la porosité entre public et privé est totalement anéantie. C’est sa singularité, son âpreté, son isolement au milieu d’un environnement vaste et hostile, l’imaginaire qu’elle véhicule, et sa perméabilité sur les relations humaines qui lui ont fait devenir, pour nous, le symbole de l’égarement du monde.

Temps met en scène trois enfants réunis par la mort de leur père. Quel rapport au temps ces enfants entretiennent-ils ?
W. M. : Nous sommes imbibés par des temps reliés à des conceptions qui ont fondé nos civilisations. Dans la Grèce antique et aujourd’hui en Inde, le temps est traversé par un mouvement circulaire : il avance dans un rapport elliptique, selon une cohérence relevant davantage d’un dialogue entre les morts et les vivants que selon une rationalité objective. En Occident, tel une flèche, le temps avance et ne revient jamais, selon une logique de cause à effet, dialoguant avec les événements du monde qui jalonnent son évolution. Mais le temps, qu’il soit mythique car circulaire ou historique avec une trajectoire, pose toujours la question du mal. Comment résoudre cette énigme ? Cette question a donné naissance à un temps, moderne, qui est tendu vers sa finalité, lorsque tout sera résolu. Ce temps-là, messianique, repose sur l’attente. C’est autour de ces trois types de temps que s’est dessinée l’architecture du spectacle. Ainsi Temps, à travers trois enfants, deux frères et leur sœur, est une rencontre entre ces trois temps : celui d’Edward l’historique (qui parle de son époque et qui est ancré dans son histoire), Noëlla la mythique (qui s’appelle ainsi à cause d’une promesse : « ce sera Noël tous les jours de la vie » ; une promesse a fortiori non tenue) et Arkadiy le messianique (qui est celui que tout le monde attend pour les sauver).
