Walking next to our shoes… intoxicated by strawberries and cream, we enter continents without knocking : le titre s’étire et s’entortille en une étrange phrase qui semble vouloir amorcer une histoire… C’est que Robyn Orlin aime à chahuter l’ordre du sens et enchâsse ici plusieurs thèmes aux rythmes de l’« ‘isicathamya », chant traditionnel zoulou a cappella scandé par les frappes des pieds. Dérivé d’un verbe qui signifie « piétiner soigneusement », l’« ‘isicathamya » reste une pratique vivace en Afrique du Sud et rappelle la condition des ouvriers noirs au début du XXème siècle, qui, migrant vers les villes, logeaient dans des hôtels où ils n’avaient pas le droit de faire du bruit et circulaient pieds nus. Les chanteurs bigarrés de la chorale Phuphuma Love Minus, rejoints par deux swankers et une chanteuse lyrique, forment un chœur aux allures fantaisistes et dévoilent les réalités africaines postapartheid, où l’exubérance luxuriante des costumes et l’humour trompent le dénuement et la dureté du quotidien. « J’essaie de chahuter par mes spectacles les normes qui conditionnent inconsciemment nos aspirations en les calquant sur une normalité standardisée. » avoue Robyn Orlin. Selon l’expression populaire zoulou, « Walking next to our shoes » veut dire « être pauvre »… sauf en imagination !
