De Robyn Orlin, on connaît les pièces à la fois joyeuses et dérangeantes, ainsi que les coups de boutoir qu’elle assène aussi bien aux conventions de la représentation qu’aux tabous et aux injustices qu’elle repère au sein de – ou vis-à-vis de – son pays, l’Afrique du Sud. Elle a chorégraphié Walking next to our shoes…(2009) pour les dix chanteurs d’un chœur traditionnel d’isicathamiya (“marcher doucement” en langue zouloue). Ce chant a cappella se combine à un piétinement qui renvoie, semble-t-il, au début du XXe siècle, lorsque des travailleurs pauvres ayant rejoint les grandes villes se retrouvaient dans des hôtels où leur était intimé l’ordre de ne pas faire de bruit en marchant… Pour Robyn Orlin, c’est l’occasion d’explorer, avec autant d’humour que d’acuité, les chaussures et les métiers qui s’y rattachent. Le spectateur n’en sort pas indemne : chacun est concerné dès lors qu’il s’agit d’interroger nos pieds, nos souliers et ce qu’ils révèlent à notre insu.
