« Après avoir créé une première pièce sur le bazin, j’ai voulu explorer le wax, qui est un autre tissu emblématique de l’Afrique aux motifs géométriques colorés, fabriqué en Hollande. C’est un tissu que j’adore, que je trouve très beau, que je suis fier de porter et qui reste très politique, car il est indissociable de la colonisation. Toutefois, les Africains l’ont apprivoisé et il leur appartient désormais. Les femmes l’utilisent même pour faire passer des messages codés et les politiciens pour leurs affiches de campagne. Dans le spectacle, le fond de la scène est en wax, les costumes aussi. Et comme le tissu, la danse a une force politique dans la pièce. Elle est empreinte d’une violence poétique, d’une tension intérieure qui explose, comme si les tensions liées à ce tissu étaient exorcisées dans la danse.
Le mythe de la caverne
Ce spectacle est aussi inspiré de ma vision du mythe de la caverne de Platon : à travers la danse, je voulais montrer le lien entre le haut et le bas, la terre et le ciel, le monde sensible et le monde intelligible. Les deux danseurs de la pièce – dont je fais partie – sont comme sur deux continents différents, séparés par la mer, sans moyens de communication. Ils évoluent en parallèle, en même temps, à l’image de la connexion qui existe entre l’Afrique et l’Europe. »
