En parallèle de l’exposition « We Want Miles ! » proposée par la Cité de la musique, une série de concerts réunit nombre de ses anciens partenaires afin de mesurer la phénoménale aura dont bénéficie le trompettiste dans l’histoire du jazz. Parmi ceux-ci, nul doute que le saxophoniste Wayne Shorter tient une place à part, pièce maîtresse du second quintet historique de Miles, qui révolutionna le langage du jazz au milieu des années 60. Pour preuve, le trompettiste écrira : « Wayne est un vrai compositeur. (…) Il est toujours curieux de jouer avec les règles musicales. Et si elles ne fonctionnent pas, il les brise ! Mais toujours avec une musicalité unique. Il a compris que la liberté en musique était l’habilité à connaître les règles plutôt que de les plier juste pour sa propre satisfaction ». C’est encore de tels principes que le saxophoniste met en œuvre depuis dix ans avec un trio rythmique au diapason de ses idées, à la fois dans la forme et hors de toute norme. Intuition, redistribution des rôles, conversation à l’improviste… Le jazz, ce quartet-là l’essore par tous les ressorts.
