Passé à la postérité comme le librettiste de la Trilogie de Mozart associant Les Noces de Figaro, Don Giovanni et Cosi fan tutte, Lorenzo Da Ponte a écrit ses Mémoires à la fin de sa vie à New York, alors que triomphait le Romantisme. La faconde de ce témoignage d’une vie pittoresque, sinon picaresque, auquel Dominic Gould prête sa voix, a inspiré à David Stern et son ensemble Opera Fuoco un spectacle qui fait revivre toute une Europe musicale de la fin du siècle des Lumières et du début du XIXe. Mise en scène par Marie-Louise Bischofberger, la carrière du dramaturge italien nous fait croiser l’empereur Joseph II et Casanova, Salieri et Mozart, sur un canevas musical balayant presque un siècle de musique et d’opéra, de Martin y Soler – dont Don Giovanni cite un air de Una cosa rara lors du souper final – à Rossini, en passant par un maillon méconnu entre Mozart et Weber, Peter von Winter, servi par un quintette de jeunes chanteurs, parmi lesquels la soprano Axelle Fanyo.
