Ce week-end Mahler débutera avec le Bamberger Symphoniker, formation bavaroise de référence fondée après la Deuxième Guerre mondiale autour d’anciens musiciens de l’Orchestre philharmonique allemand de Prague. Cet orchestre, aujourd’hui dirigé par Jonathan Nott, s’est aussi distingué en créant en 2004 le concours de direction d’orchestre Gustav Mahler (remporté la première année par Gustavo Dudamel). C’est le tchèque Jakub Hruša, son jeune Chef Principal, qui sera sur le podium du premier des trois grands rendez-vous de ce week-end, pour diriger la monumentale Troisième symphonie, avec la mezzo-soprano Bernarda Fink en soliste (le 15 à 20h30). Une autre grande phalange allemande occupera la scène dès le lendemain, les Münchner Philharmoniker, sous la direction de leur directeur musical Valery Gergiev, grand mahlérien, pour interpréter deux partitions d’inspirations très différentes, la lumineuse Quatrième symphonie et Le Chant de la terre, cette « symphonie pour orchestre, alto et ténor » véritablement habitée par l’angoisse (le 16 à 20h30). Enfin, Gergiev et ses musiciens seront de retour le dimanche pour célébrer l’art symphonique total de la gigantesque Huitième Symphonie dite la « Symphonie des Mille », dont la création mobilisa huit cent cinquante choristes, cent quarante instrumentistes et huit solistes vocaux !
