Sous l’impulsion de son directeur Jean-Luc Choplin, le Théâtre du Châtelet poursuit sa programmation à la fois populaire et originale, délibérément « crossover ». Après le succès du ballet Edward aux mains d’argent, place à Welcome to the Voice, un opéra de Steve Nieve, avec en guest star, Sting. Le chanteur de Police incarne un fils d’ouvrier qui tombe sous le charme d’une chanteuse d’opéra. Mise en scène par Muriel Teodori, l’œuvre (également disponible en CD chez Deutsche Grammophon) s’inscrit parfaitement dans le style du spectacle à l’anglo-saxonne, efficace mais pas simpliste. La distribution réunit des stars du jazz et du rock (comme Elvis Costello) et des chanteurs classiques (comme Marie-Ange Todorovitch). Dans la fosse, l’Ensemble Orchestral de Paris est dirigé par Wolfgang Doerner, un chef connu pour ses concerts avec l’Orchestre Pasdeloup.
