En 1957, la création du spectacle a été un choc. Qu’en sera-t-il cinquante ans après pour le public parisien, avide de (re)découvrir un mythe ? On ne peut pas faire fi de l’histoire de cette pièce, des projections imaginaires que l’on peut en avoir, des dix Oscars obtenus par l’adaptation cinématographique… On ne peut pas non plus mettre de côté les refrains qui nous hantent encore : « I like to be in America », « Tonight, tonight », « I feel pretty », « Maria »… Comment appréhender l’œuvre désormais ? Pour cette tournée exceptionnelle qui se veut fidèle à la première version, la reprise de la chorégraphie a été confiée à Joey McKneely, qui fut danseur et assistant de Jerome Robbins. Mais ce dernier ne fut pas le seul artisan de la réussite du spectacle, considéré comme un chef-d’œuvre de collaborations artistiques. Le livret, les paroles et la musique (Laurens / Soundheim / Bernstein), immuables, seront les témoins d’une époque certes révolue, mais qui permettra peut-être au drame des banlieues de trouver, aujourd’hui, d’autres résonances.
