L’adolescence, un enjeu délaissé par l’art musical ? Souvent l’opéra, au xxe siècle, a fait ses héros de personnages tout juste sortis de l’adolescence, mais déjà hommes ou femmes, tels Wozzeck ou Jenufa. Karlheinz Stockhausen fut l’un des rares à saisir toute la puissance d’ambiguïté que cet âge peut receler, dans sa partition électroacoustique, Chant des adolescents (Gesang der Jünglinge, 1956).
Heiner Goebbels, qui s’interroge dans ses spectacles sur les personnages en marge autant qu’aux marges du récit, s’en empare avec évidence. « À quoi rêvent les jeunes filles ? – Au couteau et au sang ». Le compositeur concluait par ce dialogue d’Alain Robbe-Grillet La Répétition en 1995. Il en fait le point de départ de When the mountain changed its clothing, où le cliché de l’innocence est sans cesse écorné par l’imprévu des réactions. Heiner Goebbels place en exergue de son spectacle cette constatation de Rousseau (Émile, ou De l’éducation) : « Si les enfants entendaient raison, ils n’auraient pas besoin d’être élevés ». C’est précisément la « raison déraisonnable » de quarante adolescentes que fait entendre le compositeur en s’appuyant sur les chanteuses de Carmina Slovenica, qui parcourt un répertoire choral s’étendant du Moyen Âge à Schoenberg et Goebbels lui-même.
