Qu’apporte, pour un pianiste, le travail avec électronique ?
Wilhem Latchoumia : C’est une façon différente de concevoir le son du piano. L’électronique apporte des couleurs supplémentaires. J’imagine qu’il y a quelqu’un qui joue avec moi. Il faut faire vivre la bande, même si c’est un partenaire virtuel qui ne fait aucune faute ! Aujourd’hui, très peu de pianistes jouent ce répertoire, sans doute à cause des contingences techniques trop compliquées.
Vous jouez également sur un piano-jouet…
W.L. : John Cage l’a utilisé en premier, dans les années 60 pour Merce Cunningham. D’autres compositeurs s’y sont ensuite intéressés, surtout des Américains. Ces petits instruments ont des marteaux en plastique, des lames en métal, mais ne possèdent pas d’étouffoir. Leur son se rapproche donc un peu de celui du célesta. Par la suite, le synthétiseur a remplacé le piano-jouet. On peut cependant encore en trouver dans certains magasins de jouets et dans les brocantes.
Quel est le rapport des compositeurs actuels avec le piano ?
W.L. : Ils sont assez frileux, car le piano a un passé très lourd en termes de répertoire. Ce qui est intéressant, c’est que chaque compositeur a une façon différente d’aborder le clavier. Par exemple, Pierre Jodlowski a une approche sauvage et libre, alors que Colin Roche a un rapport minimaliste et sensuel à l’instrument. Chacun développe sa propre esthétique.

W.L. : J’y ai déjà joué l’année dernière. C’est vrai qu’avant d’y aller, j’étais un peu stressé. Mais, grâce à l’atmosphère estivale et donc conviviale, la pression retombe rapidement. C’est un festival vraiment magique.
